The Yerevan Physics Institute (YerPhI), also known as the A.I. Alikhanyan National Science Laboratory, stands as the leading physics research institution in Armenia and the broader Caucasus region. It was founded in 1943 by the renowned physicists Abraham Alikhanyan and Artem Alikhanyan, initially as a branch of the Leningrad Institute of Physics and Technology of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Since its inception, YerPhI has achieved remarkable success in fields such as nuclear physics, cosmic ray physics, and high-energy physics, laying a solid foundation for Armenia's scientific development and enjoying a strong reputation within the international scientific community. YerPhI's research scope is extensive, encompassing various cutting-edge fields including high-energy physics, astrophysics, condensed matter physics, theoretical physics, and accelerator physics. The institute boasts advanced experimental facilities, notably the CANDLE Synchrotron Radiation Center. As the region's sole third-generation synchrotron radiation source, CANDLE provides a unique platform for research in materials science, biophysics, and nanotechnology. YerPhI actively participates in international collaborative projects, maintaining close ties with world-leading research organizations such as CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research), with its scientists playing significant roles in major international experiments. Beyond fundamental scientific inquiry, YerPhI plays a crucial role in cultivating the next generation of scientists. Through its doctoral programs and collaborations with local universities, it offers students in-depth research training and academic guidance. The institute is dedicated to advancing basic scientific research while also applying its findings to technological innovation and industrial development, thereby contributing to Armenia's socio-economic progress. Its distinctive research environment and international outlook make it an ideal destination for students and researchers passionate about physics.
