The University of Abomey-Calavi (UAC) is the largest and oldest public higher education institution in the Republic of Benin. Founded in 1970 as the University of Dahomey, it was renamed the University of Abomey-Calavi in 1999. As a vital academic center in Benin and West Africa, UAC plays a crucial role in cultivating national talent and promoting regional development. The main campus is located in Abomey-Calavi, adjacent to the economic capital Cotonou, offering students convenient access to city life and employment opportunities. UAC boasts a broad range of disciplines, covering natural sciences, humanities, social sciences, law, economics, medicine, agriculture, and engineering. Its strengths lie in agriculture, public health, economics, and law, which enjoy high reputations in Benin and surrounding countries. The university is committed to addressing practical problems facing the local community and region through teaching, research, and community service. Despite the challenges of limited resources, UAC's faculty and staff strive to provide high-quality education and actively engage in international collaborations and exchanges to enhance its academic standing and influence. The campus culture is vibrant, with a large and diverse student body from all over Benin and other African countries. Here, students can experience a unique West African cultural atmosphere and participate in various club activities and academic exchanges. However, due to the large student population, infrastructure and teaching resources may be relatively strained, and some courses may be taught in large classes. For international students, proficiency in French is an important prerequisite for integration into their studies and life. Nevertheless, UAC still offers a valuable opportunity for students seeking an affordable and regionally relevant higher education experience.
