School Overview

École Nationale Supérieure des Mines de Saint-Étienne (EMSE) is a prestigious French grande école founded in 1816 by Louis XVIII, making it the oldest elite engineering school outside Paris. As one of the seven schools of mines founded between 1783 and 1992, EMSE has evolved from an elite vocational school to a fully integrated graduate research college. The school is renowned for training ingénieurs civils des mines (mining engineers) and conducting industry-oriented research across diverse fields including materials sciences, micro-electronics, process engineering, mechanics, environment, civil engineering, finance, computer science, and health engineering. EMSE ranks 11th among French engineering schools and is globally ranked in the top 600 engineering schools worldwide by Times Higher Education.
